Week of January 3: Canonical/Landmark Cases Class

Explore the history of the Supreme Court and landmark Supreme Court cases from Marbury v. Madison (1803) to the Roberts Court. Students will preview and investigate Supreme Court cases to encourage further study of government.

The Civil Rights Movement, the Warren Court, and Landmark Civil Rights Laws

Explore the 1950s and 1960s civil rights movement; the Warren Court; and landmark civil rights laws enacted by Congress—including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965—and how they have been interpreted by the Supreme Court.

Connect your students with other classrooms nationwide! The peer-to-peer Scholar Exchanges promote deeper understandings and enhance opportunities for civil discourse and discussion. Sessions are offered Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday each week until May 2022. Learn more and register for a future session here.

Professional Learning Opportunities in 2022

Summer Teacher Institutes – The Center's education team is thrilled to offer two virtual three-day workshops and two in-person weeklong institutes in July 2022. All programs are open to educators working with grades 5–12 at public, charter, independent, parochial, and other schools.

Applications for the 2022 Summer Educator Institutes are open until Friday, February 25, 2022.

Teacher Advisory Council – The National Constitution Center's Teacher Advisory Council supports the Center by sharing best practices for teaching constitutional and civic topics—looking at the intersection of U.S. history and current events—and advises the Center on programs and resources that would best support classroom instruction on constitutional fundamentals. Teachers on the advisory council are active and engaged educational professionals who advocate on behalf the National Constitution Center with outreach for programs like the live interactive classes featuring special guest scholars and professional development opportunities.

Should the Supreme Court Be Reformed?

Last spring, President Biden issued an executive order to form the Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court of the United States, a bipartisan commission charged with examining proposals for Supreme Court reform. The commission, made up of more than 30 of the nation’s leading legal scholars and experts on the judiciary, submitted a 294-page report to the president last week.

Some of the proposals examined in the report include court expansion, term limits, and jurisdiction stripping, as well as the Court’s larger role in the constitutional system. Host Jeffrey Rosen is joined by two members of the commission: Tara Leigh Grove, professor at the University of Alabama School of Law, and Keith Whittington, professor of politics at Princeton University. They lay out the cases for and against each proposal, and discuss the complications involved in implementing any of them.
