Dear John,
On behalf of myself, the entire Alzheimer's Association community and the more than 6 million people living with Alzheimer's in the United States and their over 11 million caregivers — I want to thank you sincerely and wish you a happy holiday season and a hope-filled new year.
It isn't only dedicated scientists working on critical research that make progress possible in the fight to end Alzheimer's. It's our generous supporters, who ensure that vital research continues and that care and support is available to those who need it.
We recently released our Alzheimer's Association Annual Report, and I want to make sure you have the chance to see the remarkable impact friends like you make possible.
Thanks to your generous support, we were able to:
- Provide care and support more than 7.5 million times through channels including alz.org, care consultations, support groups, education programs and information.
- Answer more than 220,000 calls through our 24/7 Helpline (800.272.3900), offering free confidential support and information to people facing Alzheimer's and all other dementia.
- Invest $70 million in Alzheimer's and dementia research, including more than $59 million in grants to 253 new scientific investigations.
- Advocate for an increase in Alzheimer's and dementia research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of $300 million, bringing federal funding to $3.2 billion annually.
The last two years have been a challenging time for many of us. And they've been particularly difficult for those living with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers who've dealt with increased isolation and decreased access to social support and community resources due to the pandemic. But we've never turned away from our crucial work, and you've helped make our unwavering commitment possible.
I also want to mention that while this time of year can be joyful, it can also be painful for those who are missing their loved ones, including those affected by Alzheimer's. If this is true for you and your family, we are here for you.
We're available, through our free 24/7 Helpline (800.272.3900), all day, every day — even during the holiday season. And our website, alz.org, is always available with helpful resources like our virtual support groups and ALZConnected®, an online community for everyone touched by Alzheimer's. If you or your family should ever need support, information or guidance, don't hesitate to call or reach out, any hour of the day.
The more we support each other, the stronger we all are. Thank you for standing with us and supporting our mission to lead the way to end Alzheimer's and all other dementia — by accelerating global research, driving risk reduction and early detection, and maximizing quality care and support.
It's been a challenging year, but we've still achieved so much together. However, our work must continue. For this reason, all of us at the Alzheimer's Association are deeply grateful to you for your generosity, commitment and extraordinary compassion.
Best wishes and happy holidays to you and yours. Together, we can end Alzheimer's.
Sincerely,
Donna McCullough
Chief Mission and Field Operations Officer
P.S. If you'd like to show your support this holiday season for families affected by Alzheimer's, now is the perfect time. Our $200,000 Holiday Match Challenge is in full swing, and you can have your first gift go twice as far to provide care and support and accelerate research. Until December 31, you can make a year-end contribution that will help fight Alzheimer's with 2X the impact.
