For far too many Americans, a college degree is out of reach because of the outrageous cost – and for too many others, the debt incurred on the path to higher education is crushing, with 45 million student borrowers owing $1.75 trillion in loans.
This is especially true for African American students and students of color, who are less likely to be able to afford college than their white peers and more likely to default on their loans after graduating.
I’ve introduced legislation that would help ease the burden of student debt before. But with student loan payments set to restart in the new year, I’m calling on our leaders to cancel student loan debt once and for all.
