Dear John,
It’s been almost four years since my friends, fellow organizers, and I took over the streets of Washington D.C. That moment turned into a movement for our generation. We stood up and said “enough is enough.” We called BS on the NRA, the Trump Administration, and anyone else who ever implied that their guns, and their power, were more important than our lives. We’ve clapped back at corrupt politicians, including Marjorie Taylor Greene when she came after me with personal attacks.
We’ve certainly been through a lot, but John, let me tell you what gives me hope. Our generation is FIRED UP, and we will outwork, out-organize, and outlast those who wish to see us fail. As this year comes to a close, and we make important decisions about where to focus in 2022, I have to ask: Can we count on you to power this movement next year?

The movement is now broader, more diverse, and stronger than ever – but so is the threat of gun violence. This year, between classes, I found myself glued to the news, face-to-face with a constant onslaught of new mass shootings while everyday gun violence in BIPOC communities across the country was overshadowed in the media. 2021 was the highest year on record for gun deaths, guns continued to fly off of the shelves, and a new Supreme Court case could lead to the proliferation of guns in every major U.S. city.
But we are doing something about it. Here are four of our biggest wins this year:

1. It Ends With Us Policy Plan: After robust conversations with the gun violence prevention community, survivors of gun violence, and a variety of policy experts, we released our tangible, actionable policy plan “It Ends With Us” to serve as a roadmap for our plan to reimagine public safety.
2. Judicial Advocacy Team: We filed Amicus Briefs in critical cases all the way up to the Supreme Court, celebrated victories for student free speech in Florida HB233 and Mahanoy Area School District v. BL, and rallied with MFOL activists and Gabby Giffords on the steps of the Supreme Court to demand the justices to not expand open-carry.
3. Community Violence Intervention: After calls for Community Violence Intervention funding from MFOL and our partners, the White House proposed a $5B CVI investment in the Build Back Better Act.
4. Aid & Alliance: MFOL launched a resource-sharing program called “Aid & Alliance,” distributing grants to underfunded BIPOC youth-led organizations in communities hit hardest by gun violence and COVID 19. Our chapters held mutual aid drives that served 30,000 families and individuals nationwide.

Next year, young people will return to the polls in a new electoral landscape. Dozens of states have enacted laws that make it more difficult for young people to make our voices heard. Our role as a youth-led movement is critical.
March For Our Lives historically re-energized the debate on guns and made people care once before. We can and will do it again in 2022. Here’s to another year with you by our side.
