This weekend I had the pleasure and privilege of visiting Bellefontaine, Ohio. While I was there I was able to pay a visit to a few local businesses from the community.
For the last ten years, Bellefontaine has gone through a massive revitalization that’s brought new life to the downtown and its surrounding areas. But for decades before that, it was a ghost town with 80% of the first floor retail locations boarded-up or abandoned.
Interacting with multiple small business owners in Bellefontaine gave me a sense of optimism and inspiration.
Every person I met was a trailblazer meeting the challenges they faced as small business owners head-on to continue to grow and thrive.
The most important takeaway for me, however, is the promise of Ohio’s future. It isn’t going to come from corrupt corporations buying our politicians. It’s going to come from Ohioans, like the homegrown entrepreneurs I met in Bellefontaine, who care about where they work and live.
I believe we can make this happen all across Ohio if we have people in Congress who are not bought and paid for by the monopolies that are responsible for devastating many small towns—and if we make sure people have health care, childcare, and equal access to capital to start businesses.
The passion in Bellefontaine was palpable. As Senator, I want to make this possible in every community across Ohio.
