COVID-19 has made student debt exponentially worse for Americans—over 43 million people have student loan debt and many are struggling to get by during the pandemic.¹ And masses of people will be thrown back into loan repayment in a few short weeks, even though we face the Omicron variant spreading, inflation driving up prices, and the pandemic’s lingering effects holding individuals and the economy back.

Many experts and lawmakers have called on President Biden to not restart student loan payments on Feb. 1. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer issued a letter recently saying “too many are still not financially prepared to shoulder a giant monthly bill.”² Restarting payments on Feb. 1 will be a financial disaster, but the President has the power to stop it.

Continuing the pause on federal student loan payments is an important investment in Americans' financial lives. It gives people the financial freedom to pay rent or purchase homes, afford healthcare or medicine, start small businesses, and support their families.

There’s growing energy and bipartisan public support to cancel student debt. Before the 2020 election, a poll showed a majority of voters support canceling student debt during the pandemic—with strong support from both Democrats and Republicans. Even 52% of voters who have never taken out a student loan said they would support debt relief.³
