This December, countless Americans will celebrate the holidays with their families, including thousands of people released on home confinement under the CARES Act. If President Biden doesn’t act, they will be sent back to prison.

Under the CARES Act, people like Jennifer, Miranda, Prentice, and Jeanne Rae were allowed to finish their sentences at home with their families due to the pandemic. It hasn’t been easy:

“I am not allowed to attend church, visit family members, step one foot into my neighbor’s yard, or take my grandchildren for a walk in the park, without the fear of being reincarcerated. All of these actions are considered a violation that mandates an immediate return to prison,” — Prentice Hoard.

Still, home confinement has allowed more than 4,000 people to reconnect with their families. Since coming home, Jennifer has built relationships with her five grandchildren, four of whom were born while she was in prison. Prentice was able to reconnect with family and friends that he had not seen in 20 years. And Jeanne Rae said, she feels like a functioning member of society again.

In spite of this, the Biden administration is still planning to send people like Jeanne Rae back to federal prison, an act that would create heartbreak and suffering without making communities any safer.

This holiday season, take a moment to speak out for our brothers and sisters who are home this holiday season — but could be back behind bars next year if President Biden fails to act.
