Dear Friend,
For 50 years the drug war has been used to criminalize us for the personal choices we make. And due to targeted enforcement, it has had a particularly ruthless impact on generations of Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities. Imagine trying to feed your family and first being denied a job and then being denied even the most basic public assistance, like food stamps… all because of a simple drug arrest.
It’s not fair. And it’s not humane.
We must replace drug war criminalization with voluntary health and support services for those who want them. We’ve accomplished this in Oregon, where we ended criminal penalties for drug possession and invested in health-based drug services for the first time ever in the United States. Arrests have plummeted and funding is flowing to life-saving programs in the communities that need them the most.
Thanks to member support we are building on Oregon’s success with the federal Drug Policy Reform Act. The Drug Policy Reform Act would end criminal penalties for drugs at the federal level and increase access to life-saving health services for problematic drug use.
At year end, we need you to strengthen the fight for change in 2022. Because ending the drug war is doable, but it is going to be a fight. We need you to help end one of the most entrenched tools of oppression. A generous donor will match all gifts up to $150,000, but only through December 31st. Triple your impact to end the harmful drug war.
Friend, we cannot lose momentum. Donate now.
