Representation matters. Young people must be able to see themselves in all walks of life — it reinforces that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.

I believe representation matters greatly in the people who hold public office. Seeing people like me, a Black woman, in an elected role reinforces to Black and Brown children that they can also make a difference in their communities by serving the public.

Today, women of color constitute only 9.2% of Congress. While the number may seem low, it’s actually the highest proportion of women of color who have ever served in the House and Senate.

I’m so proud to see how much progress has been made in my lifetime — I attended a segregated school until 6th grade. But there is plenty of work that still needs to be done to move our country forward.

In Congress, I will be a leader to reform our criminal justice system and tackle systemic racism. I also will add to the diversity of Congress, bringing a needed voice and perspective to Washington.
