Dear John, Unless you’ve been in prison like me, you don’t know the joy I feel this holiday season. Words can’t describe the happiness I feel to be able to spend time with my family after being separated from them for so many years. For the first time in 20 years, I’m free to show my loved ones that I’m thinking about them by spending time with them, not just sending a card. I have the liberty to buy them presents. I feel more relevant now that I’m on the outside. This year, I’m going to reflect on this moment, respect it, understand what it means to me, and I won’t take it for granted. I’m especially grateful for the opportunity to effectuate change in my work at The Sentencing Project. Everyday, I work with people who work hard to change the narrative for individuals like me. The Sentencing Project gives a better understanding of what true criminal legal reform can look like, and that’s what I’m all about. I don’t want to relive the past. I just want to help the next person. | |
