Dear Friend, |
I’m pleased to share with you Earthjustice’s annual report for the fiscal year ending in June 2021. The hard work and victories highlighted here reflect only a fraction of all the progress that we have been able to make together. We are deeply honored by your confidence in us, and we hope you will be inspired, as we are, by the clients we are privileged to represent. You will find a few of their stories in this report. |

While we are still repairing the damage done by the last administration, we are pleased to report that we continue to win our cases and restore essential environmental protections. Earthjustice has so far won 52 of the 62 cases that have been decided among the more than 200 lawsuits filed against the Trump administration — an 84% win rate that we may further improve on appeal. In one such case, we succeeded in halting ConocoPhillips’ massive oil drilling project in the Western Arctic despite the endorsement of the project by both the Trump and Biden administrations, protecting precious wildlife and wildlands and safeguarding the health and traditional lifeways of Alaska Natives. |
This result is emblematic of the power of law in the most imbalanced fights against powerful polluting industries. It also illustrates the role Earthjustice must always play — no matter who the president is — to overcome the politics of a given moment and protect our planet now and for the future. |
As I write, we are all awaiting a Senate vote on the Build Back Better Act. It has been a once-in-a-lifetime privilege for Earthjustice staff to push for watershed legislation that would transform the landscape for us and our clients. We have never seen anything like the level of government investment in climate solutions and communities that the Act contemplates. We are doing everything in our power to ensure the bill passes, and if and when it does, we will be rolling up our sleeves to engage in ensuring that the funding is deployed efficiently, equitably, and transformatively. |
No matter what, we are ready for the exacting and exciting work ahead of us, and we are deeply grateful to you for making our work together possible. Please enjoy this report, take pride in our progress, and accept our deep gratitude for your partnership. |
