Families across Afghanistan have been forced to flee their homes, often without enough time to take essentials like winter coats.

John: Afghan children and their families are in grave danger.

Temperatures are already dropping below freezing at night in Kabul. That's the kind of cold that can numb your fingers, make your body shake and weaken your immune response. And with winter beginning in earnest this week, things are expected to get even worse.

More than 5.5 million Afghans remain displaced because of political instability, climate shocks and COVID-19. Now, many are stranded in temporary shelters without adequate food, heat or warm clothing.

You can help deliver winter supplies and other urgently-needed aid to Afghanistan and crisis zones around the world. And if you give right now, a generous donor will match your gift to make 2X the difference for families in need:

Families across Afghanistan have been forced to flee their homes, often without enough time to take essential items like winter coats. Many had nowhere to go and had to set up tents in Kabul's parks — where temperatures at night are already dropping as low as 14°F.

Our teams are working around the clock to provide emergency cash so people can get the winter items they need. We are also supporting health clinics that are treating malnourished children, because winter exacerbates the crises — like hunger — families are already facing.

$56 can provide 10 warm blankets. $80 can treat a child for acute malnutrition. $200 can provide a refugee family with coats, hats, gloves and boots. These are just a few examples of what your support could do in crisis zones facing harsh winters.

Last year, severe winter storms and temperatures as low as 5°F killed dozens of people in Afghanistan. Heavy snowfall and flash floods can close highways, cut power, and make it extremely difficult for emergency services to reach people in need.

John: Please make a gift to help families in the world's toughest places prepare for winter before it's too late. Your gift will be matched today »

We have delivered life-changing aid in Afghanistan — through crisis after crisis — for over 30 years thanks to supporters like you. And thanks to you, we will stay for as long as we are needed. — Andrea, IRC

P.S. Did you see the IRC's emergency work in Afghanistan featured on "60 Minutes" last week? I hope you're proud of the work we're doing together, John. As a brutal winter sets in across Afghanistan, the need for families has never been more urgent. Please help if you can. Thank you.
