Dear Jack,
With less than a week to go before Christmas and with the two by-elections now behind us, I wanted to write today to thank you, and to look back on what has been a truly remarkable year for those of us involved in Reform UK.
As I’ve said before, it is almost hard to believe that as we approached Christmas last year, Reform UK was still not yet approved by the Electoral Commission!
Consider with me for a moment the things that we have been able to achieve together since.
In May we stood a full slate of candidates in the Welsh Senedd elections, as we also did for the Greater London Assembly Elections. We stood over a dozen Police and Crime Commissioner candidates and a record number of candidates in the Scottish Parliamentary Elections.
We didn’t just stand candidates either. We mounted serious campaigns in those areas, canvassing huge parts of London and delivering leaflets to every house in Wales, large parts of Scotland and London and also across Hartlepool, where we stood in our first Westminster by-election.
We had a great candidate standing for us in Hartlepool. John Prescott worked tirelessly for Reform UK, which was evidenced by him finishing ahead of the Greens and the Lib Dems.
There have been other by-elections since. Airdrie & Shott. Chesham & Amersham and more recently Old Bexley & Sidcup and North Shropshire. To be a real political party that people will take seriously, I’m an avid believer that you need to stand in every election you can reasonably do. We have done that since we first formed, with only two exceptions and for both of those we had very strong reasons as to why we didn’t participate.
I want to say a particular thanks to John Prescott, Martyn Greene, Alex Wilson and Kirsty Walmsley for having the courage to put their heads above the political parapet in those by-elections. They all continue to do our party proud.
At the start of October we had our first Party Conference in Manchester where, despite fuel shortages and covid restrictions, hundreds of our supporters came to listen to a great lineup of speakers outlining our optimistic, positive vision for the future.
Our conference coincided with the launch of our first policy document, ‘Reform is Essential”, which now plays a key role in our by-election campaigns and which continues to attract attention from voters across the country (along with – it seems – policymakers in Downing Street)!
