As we mark the 50th anniversary of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) this month on December 22, 1971, we are looking back at our history and looking ahead to the next humanitarian challenges. The doctors and journalists who came together to found this organization believed that our medical action must not be silent. From the start, our medical teams made a commitment to care for patients as well as to speak out and call attention to the problems driving emergency needs. This remains a core element of our response to disasters, both natural and human-made. This timeline documents five decades of our work bearing witness. Over the years, many of these images have inspired empathy, solidarity, and, often, outrage.
