Team, I was 12 years old when my dad died of a heart attack.

My family was lucky enough to have a community that came together to support us -- including my surrogate father, who was a Teamster. He taught me so much about what it means to come together, work hard, fight for working people, and uplift communities. From then on, I was determined to devote my life to helping others and fighting for civil rights.

I became a civil rights attorney in the Department of Justice and President Obama's Head of Civil Rights -- where I prosecuted high profile cases from white-supremacist hate crimes to police brutality and lauched a RECORD number of police misconduct cases.

I became president of the Montgomery County Council, Maryland Labor Secretary, and U.S. Labor Secretary where I helped pass the nation's first living wage law, fought for workers, and held predatory companies accountable.

And now, I'm running for governor because I want to use my experience fighting injustice to build a better Maryland where opportunity and justice are equal for all. But it's going to take all of us to win this fight:

A lifetime fighting for civil rights has taught me a simple lesson: We will never achieve our potential as a state until ALL of us have access to equal opportunity.
