Good morning, John, it’s Morgan. I wanted to take a moment today to share a little bit about what inspired me to be in this race.
For years, I followed politics and observed politicians with an intrigued but somewhat disappointed eye, and I think a lot of folks can relate to this. I was frustrated with the lack of movement on key issues that I cared about and were affecting me, my family, and my community.
It seemed like no matter who had the majority, political leaders were in constant deadlock and nothing was getting done. I would watch politicians on TV, listen to their speeches, see their interviews and I didn’t feel inspired. I was looking for role models, and folks I could relate to, but they were shockingly absent.
UNTIL: I saw Ayanna Pressley was running. She was a totally different kind of person then the typical corporate-backed career politician and she openly rejected the establishment. She made it work and won. Her fierceness, and fearlessness were key in making me see myself in this work.
THEN: I saw folks like Lauren Underwood win without being a part of the D.C. establishment. Seeing the way that women and women of color were putting themselves out there and going for it in politics showed me that I not only could but should do the same.
I got my start fighting back against corrupt corporations and organizing for a better Ohio. My love for my community continues to guide me and it’s what still motivates me to keep going (even in blizzards like this one 😉❄️).
So thank you, John. Thanks for being with me in this fight and on this journey. I know it may seem like an impossibly uphill battle, but when I look at the leadership, drive, and passion of the women of color who came before me, I know that this is possible. If we all come together, we can really flip this state blue and make the Ohio of our dreams a reality.
