Dear Friend,
Tuesday, November 5 is Election Day in many local jurisdictions. Election day provides us with an opportunity to exercise our rights and contribute to the ongoing American experiment of rule of, by, and for the people. If your community has a local election this Tuesday, please Vote!
I don’t have to tell you that our basic freedoms are being challenged like never before. The United States Supreme Court has allowed unchecked partisan gerrymandering that allows politicians to draw their own districts, and dark money to flow into our campaigns by the millions. Our president strains the rule of law every day.
But it is in the people, in you, that our founders vested power. One year ago Americans sent a message that a game rigged towards corporations doesn’t square with our values. One year ago Americans sent a message that a pre-existing condition shouldn’t be a barrier to health coverage. In the year that the Democratic Party has controlled the House of Representatives we’ve passed bill after bill to restore power and dignity to workers around the country. We’ve begun to hold the president accountable through diligent oversight.
Local elections demand our attention. My staff and I are always looking for strong local partners to help bring resources into your community, and it is vital that we maintain momentum heading into next year’s presidential election.Taking back the House was just one step. In the coming year I’ll be working to turn Ohio blue again. President Obama won our state twice; with strong, progressive voices up and down the ballot we will be successful again.
I thank you for exercising your fundamental right to vote. Our living democracy depends on it.
Yours,
Marcy Kaptur
