John, the holiday season can be a difficult time for a lot of folks, so I’ve been thinking a lot about the word resilience lately, and why I do the work that I do in Congress on behalf of all of you. 

I’ve had to overcome a lot during my life, even when I’ve been shaken to my very core. When I’ve had my faith tested. I’ve suffered huge setbacks: Divorce, losing my son Jordan, and battling breast cancer to name a few. 

Each time, I’ve managed to come out of the other side of a crisis and overcome these challenges. I come from a lineage of “overcomers.” And of course, these trials have come alongside the good, beautiful, and wonderful times in my life.

John, I fundamentally believe the work I do is rooted in service. And I don’t think I could put myself in the shoes of the people I’m serving in Congress if I had not gone through all of these challenges in life. My lived experience gives me the ability to empathize with my constituents and the problems they’re facing, not just sympathize for them. 

Drawing on my own experiences helps me understand how hard I have to fight in Congress to make sure our families and children are safe, to make sure people have a better quality of life, and are served in the sense of democracy they’ve been promised by their elected officials. 

John, I’m going to continue to serve you in Congress as long as I am able, but overcoming all of our challenges to get back to Congress in 2022 is going to take a tremendous amount of work.
