John,
This week marked nine years since the devastating shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. In just seconds, 26 children and teachers were brutally murdered. I was only a kid when this tragedy occurred, but as I’ve grown up, others keep happening. I often ask myself: How do we continue to let children, educators, and our families experience such pain and loss?
Now that I’m older, and after much reflection, I’ll tell you why: Congress has failed to protect the next generation from gun violence in America — and I’m living proof. My name is Robert Schentrup and my sister, Carmen Schentrup, was one of the 17 victims of the Parkland High School shooting in Parkland, FL.
I faced an insurmountable pain when Carmen was killed — one that’s hard to even put into words. But my pain has turned to outrage because, time and again, I watch NRA-backed lawmakers in Congress block solutions to protect America’s youth. In fact, right after the Sandy Hook shooting, NRA-backed senators used the filibuster to block bipartisan legislation that would have helped prevent school shootings.
Thank you for taking action with Brady. I know that we can do so much more to protect young people from gun violence. But only with your help, John. Please help me ensure that the next generation never has to experience the suffering my family and I have experienced. In solidarity, Carmen’s brother The Holidays Are Upon Us: Here’s How You Can Prevent “Family Fire” About 4.6 million children in America live in homes with access to an unlocked or unsupervised gun. As the holiday season continues and homes begin to fill with family and friends, it’s important to keep our homes safe — and that includes practicing safe firearm storage. Every day, eight kids are unintentionally injured or killed as a result of family fire, which is a shooting involving an improperly stored or misused gun from the home. Whether or not you own guns, you can play a critical role in helping end family fire. Read our tips now for how to prepare your home and check in on friends and family.
Tell Your Senators: Pass the Build Back Better Act! The Build Back Better Act includes a historic $5 billion for community-based resources to reduce gun violence. This life-saving funding would expand access to evidence-based resources proven to break cycles of violence, like GED tutoring, mental health counseling, housing support, and more.
The Build Back Better Act just passed the House. Now, we need your help ensuring its passage in the Senate! Here are TWO ways you can act now:
We will, together, ensure that underserved communities have the resources they need to prevent gun violence and save lives. This week, longtime Brady members and fellow gun violence prevention activists held their 108th protests outside the NRA headquarters in Fairfax, VA. These dedicated activists — who are this week’s Gun Violence Prevention Heroes of the Week — have protested outside the NRA on the 14th of every single month since December 14, 2012, when 26 children and teachers were brutally shot and killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Activists gather outside of NRA headquarters nine years after the Sandy Hook massacre. (L-R): Ben Zuhl, gun violence prevention activist, Manuel Oliver, gun violence survivor and founder of Change the Ref, Christian Heyne, gun violence survivor and vice president of Policy at Brady, Kevin Bergen, Brady activist, Martina Leinz, Virginian and Brady Board member, Donna Finkelstein, founder of the Million Mom March and long-time Brady activist, Shikha Hamilton, director of grassroots and mobilization at Brady, and LaRisha, a gun violence prevention activist. We at Brady thank these dedicated activists for speaking truth to power and honoring the lives lost to our nation’s gun violence epidemic. We know that with them on our side, we will dissolve the NRA once and for all. Will you join our call to dissolve the NRA today?
