Val Demings is a lifelong Floridian – the daughter of a maid and a janitor, the youngest of seven children.

It wasn’t easy growing up as a Black girl from a poor family in the South – attending segregated schools. But her parents worked hard, and they taught her the value of hard work, spirit and love.

Her passion for public service started at a young age – staying with her throughout her entire life, including at Florida State University, where she became the first in her family to graduate from college.

As a working mom, her husband, Jerry, supported her as she served 27 years in the Orlando Police Department – working her way up to chief of police.
