This week marked the end of the first session of the 117th Congress, and the Democrats wrapped it up with legislation that comes to no one’s surprise: raising the debt ceiling instead of balancing the budget, complaining that they couldn’t spend $5 Trillion on Biden’s Build Back Better right now, attacking former congressman and Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, and passing a completely political bill that would create more government at the Department of State (DoS) with the mission of ringing the Islamophobia alarm (which DoS already does).
For the House Majority this year, there’s been lots of politics and zero accomplishments. In one of the largest deficit spending years in American history, Democrats passed the $1.9 Trillion ‘American Rescue Plan’, the $2 Trillion infrastructure (after much drama in the House Democratic Caucus) and finished out this Session by complaining and guilt-tripping everyone who doesn’t want to keep spending your money. In a time of the highest inflation in the past 40 years, the combined efforts of Janet Yellen, Joe Biden, congressional Democrats, and some RINOs to recklessly raise the debt ceiling by $2.5 trillion, pushing this crisis off until after the midterms comes to no surprise.
Our country is in no position to increase spending, especially under Biden’s trashed economy. I will never vote in favor of raising the debt limit.

NATIONAL STAND YOUR GROUND ACT
This week, I introduced the National Stand Your Ground Act, alongside Reps. Louie Gohmert (TX-01), Paul Gosar (AZ-04), Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA-14), Markwayne Mullin (OK-02), Greg Steube (FL-17), and Randy Weber (TX-14). This bill would ensure that all Americans have the right to defend their life from an attacker. If someone tries to kill you, you should have the right to return fire and preserve your life.
Currently, 35 states have Stand Your Ground laws, permitting one’s right to self-defense, while 15 states have “Duty to Retreat” laws, which force anyone facing imminent death to only flee to safety.
The National Stand Your Ground Act codifies Florida’s ‘Stand Your Ground’ law at the federal level, ensuring that no person will be ensnared by a ‘Duty to Retreat’ when faced with a life threatening situation. The National Stand Your Ground Act is consistent with notions of both the Second Amendment and the Fourteenth Amendment, and is legally consistent with many judicial decisions across the country, including Kyle Rittenhouse’s “not guilty” verdict from weeks ago.
Let’s reaffirm in law what exists in our Constitution and in the hearts of our fellow Americans. It’s time to federalize Stand Your Ground laws, so that ALL Americans stand united in the right to protect our own lives.

It is long passed time to use Congressional oversight authority to hold House Committees and Executive branch institutions accountable, rather than allow for DC business as usual.
GAETZ JOINS MTG LETTER CALLING TO FIRE THE DEPUTY WARDEN OF DC JAIL
Kathleen Landerkin, deputy warden of operations at the Central Treatment Facility (CTF) in Washington, D.C., has overseen the torture of January 6 pretrial defendants. Along with 12 other Republican colleagues, I have joined Marjorie Taylor Green’s (GA-14) letter to Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser to act in the name of justice. MTG has exposed tweets showing Landerkin’s political animus against Trump supporters long before the events of January 6, including a tweet on a since-deleted account that reportedly read in November 2019: "f*** everyone who supports Trump."
Deputy Warden Landerkin treats the January 6 detainees categorically differently than all other inmates, which should preclude her from having and abusing her position at the CTF. Landerkin is against the equal treatment of persons being detained, anti-Christian, and anti-American. It is time for Mayor Bowser to step up and find a replacement who treats inmates impartially and doesn’t abide by a selective system of justice.

I am excited to see that an overwhelming majority of NW Floridians support my “National Stand Your Ground” Act! Independent from me, WEAR 3 ran a story on National Stand Your Ground this week, and as shown above, conducted a poll to track the response. While some media outlets love using polls as a way to cast unfavorability over a congressman’s legislative agenda, I am proud that so many of you in Florida’s First District continue to revel in our 2nd Amendment rights and agree with me that the liberal ‘Duty to Retreat’ must be abolished for the sake of everyone's Right to LIFE.
