Texas Values Testifies Against Harris County Proposal to Fund Abortion Using Taxpayer Dollars

Texas State Representative Briscoe Cain (District 128) and Jonathan Covey, Director of Policy at Texas Values testified on Tuesday morning in Houston at the Harris County Commissioners Court against the memo that County Judge Lina Hidalgo brought. The memo pushed for taxpayer money to be used to aid those getting abortions and to encourage more girls to get abortions by providing free transportation and free lodging across state lines to a state that it is legal.

Thankfully, Texas Values and others drove to Houston to say, "No more nonsense." This memo includes language that is in conflict with the Texas Heartbeat Law, attempting to involve Harris County taxpayers to aid and abet abortions by violating the Texas Heartbeat Law that has been upheld at the U.S. Supreme Court twice.

Texas State State Law Protects Women and Girls From the Food and Drug Administration's Dangerous Distribution of Mail-Order Abortion Drugs

The Food and Drug Administration (F.D.A.) adjusted their policies during the start of the Covid-19 pandemic by temporarily removing a requirement that abortion drugs must be prescribed and picked up only after seeing a doctor in person. The F.D.A. has recently come forward stating that this Covid-adjusted temporary rule is now being made permanent. Under it, any girl or woman can have access to a very dangerous abortion pill by mail order without having to physically see a physician for an evaluation.

However, since the changes are coming from Biden's unelected bureaucrats, this policy change does not trump state law that currently holds restrictions to mail-order abortion. Texas is one of those states that has laws in place protecting women against such risks. Texas has two current laws that have created statewide standards for abortions. The Texas Senate Bill 4, No Mail-Order Abortion law, regulates chemical abortion drugs and the Texas Heartbeat Law prohibits abortion after the detection of a heartbeat. Both laws protect girls and women from being exploited and harmed, and also protect babies in the womb from abortion.

Remember: You Have the Right to Say 'Merry Christmas' in Texas Public Schools

In 2013, the Merry Christmas Law (H.B. 208) passed with bi-partisan support to bring clarity to the issue of what public schools could do and say regarding Christmas. The Law has empowered public schools and individuals to use their constitutional rights to freely acknowledge and educate students about Christmas and Hanukkah.

Christmas encompasses the story of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Teachers and students should be free to celebrate and express their beliefs when it comes to Christmas greetings, decorations, and the meaning of the holiday. You may recall Texas Values helped defend a Killeen school teacher's Christmas decoration that included a that included a quote from the movie character “Linus” in the Charlie Brown Christmas case.

The Merry Christmas Law offers clarification and ease in furthering the protection in greetings including “Merry Christmas” at publics schools. The Law protects the right for public schools, staff and teachers to recognize and discuss these two monumental holidays without the fear of being persecuted or reported to the “speech police.” And as it is nearing the last week of school before the holidays, it is important for you to remember that this law protects your right to say 'Merry Christmas,' call parties 'Christmas parties,' and have decorations that express the Christmas holiday. If your school attempts to deny any expressions for Christmas, please do not hesitate to contact Texas Values and let your school administrators know about the Merry Christmas Law.
