Friend—
Writers are responsible for bearing witness to our times, making sense of the human condition and its many joys and travails. They’re also powerful champions against authoritarianism and abuses of power.
But the threats to writers—including systemic inequities that prevent writers of marginalized backgrounds from being heard, book bans, and an increasingly punitive cultural discourse that often leads to self-censorship—are on the rise.

As I’ve said before, recognition and support from organizations like PEN America have made all the difference for me in my writing career and helped me to keep going. To remember that I am not alone.
With your support, PEN America is able to continue providing opportunities for underrepresented writers through programs like the Emerging Voices fellowship; our storied Literary Awards program; and the Writing for Justice Fellowship. Your support is critical to the work that PEN America does in amplifying the voices that need to be heard. ([link removed])
Thank you so much for any help you can give, and all the best,

P.S. This coming Monday happens to be my birthday, and I'd love it if you could help me celebrate by supporting PEN America. Please give whatever you can. ([link removed])
