A new bill, the African American History Act, which invests $10 million over 5 years in the National Museum of African American History, was recently introduced in Congress. As an educator, I know African American history education programs are essential to our understanding of this country, and I’m proud to support the cause of this bill. Will you join me in supporting it by adding your name today?

I also know the scope of this bill extends far beyond the classroom, as our country’s complicated history of oppression is intertwined with the inequity and opportunity gaps we face as a nation today. As a Black Marylander and the descendant of enslaved people, I feel deeply that we must grapple with the hard truths of our past in order to put in the hard work to build a stronger future.
Here’s what else I know: far-right Republicans are trying to erase my family’s history and so many other stories like it. GOP leaders like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis are corrupting the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by twisting his words to push a white-washed version of history. But I know the teachings of Dr. King bolster our cause. After all, it was he who said “The day we see the truth and cease to speak is the day we begin to die.”
Our students deserve to know the truth so they can make a better tomorrow, and it’s imperative we preserve, promote, and prioritize teaching our country’s story and tell the truth about Black history. If we all remain committed to advancing justice, I know that in Maryland and nationwide, we can achieve a more equitable future.
So, please, join me in supporting this critical piece of legislation and in our fight to promote equity at every level.
