John – I know you’re waiting for news on the Freedom to Vote Act, just like all Americans who care about democracy. Right now, Senator Manchin is in talks with his colleagues about reforming the filibuster, and we’re doing everything we can to send a strong message to Congress that they MUST pass this bill.
But, John, RepresentUs can’t wait any longer to talk about what comes after this bill.
Here’s the deal: Even though the bill would fortify our democracy, the Freedom to Vote Act won’t be enough to stop the wave of anti-democracy attacks coming at us in 2022. That’s why we’re gearing up to:
- Ensure that, if passed, the Freedom to Vote Act is properly implemented nationwide,
- Pass ranked choice voting in more cities and states to break the 2-party duopoly,
- Take on gerrymandering in every state, and
- Defuse upcoming threats to our elections.
This movement is strong. RepresentUs members are stepping up to help us meet our end-of-year goal of $75,000 – and we’re close, but we only have 15 days to raise the rest. John, can you pitch in $15 now to put us over the finish line?
You’ve already done so much to pass the Freedom to Vote Act - thank you. Here’s how your investment will fund the future, no matter what it holds:
Scenario 1: The Senate passes the Freedom to Vote Act.
- We celebrate!
- Then we maintain vigilance. Special interests & obstructionists went to great lengths to avoid even debating this – they are certain to try to torpedo its implementation.
- Additionally, we will still work state-by-state to pass ranked choice voting, reverse statewide gerrymandering, and weed out the corrupt influence of money in politics. We must continue to succeed on these key fronts; otherwise, the 2022 and 2024 elections will still be subject to attacks from anti-democracy forces.
Scenario 2: The Senate sinks the Freedom to Vote Act.
- We take a breath and follow John Lewis' sage wisdom: Never give up, never give in, never give out.
- We reallocate resources to the long list of statewide battles – for fighting gerrymandering state by state, and countering state laws that would subvert election administration –- that now face an even steeper climb.
- We continue to build and grow our coalition work to activate Americans across the political spectrum to protect the 2022 election.
Either way, your support is critical to maintaining the momentum we’ve built this year and building for what’s next.
65 donations to this email will keep us on track to meet our goal and fight any challenge we face next year. John, can I count you in?
This is going to be a critical year for our movement — thank you for being a part of it.
