Welcome to the first edition of the New North Carolina Project Weekly Bulletin!

Before we dive into the nitty gritty, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Kristen Havlik, I use she/her pronouns, I was born and raised in Raleigh, where I currently reside with my husband, and I’m the digital director at the New North Carolina Project. I came into this work by the New North Carolina Project Foundation Executive Director YaKima Rhinehart. She and I met while organizing for Elizabeth Warren for President in 2019 and 2020. Since then, she and I have gone on to advocate for paid family leave and now we’re here.

I’m in this work because I’ve seen firsthand how politicians on both sides of the aisle have given communities of color lip service, by coming to them during election cycles and then continuing to disenfranchise them when the election is over. The New North Carolina Project is here to put an end to that. There is so much work to do here in our state- North Carolina can live up to its potential, to deliver to the people, if we invest in communities of color first.

Every week I’ll let you know about our progress, what our movement needs, informing you of important things happening in NC and celebrating our community.

In case you missed it, our primary was moved from March 8, 2022 to May 17, 2022 by the NC State Supreme Court.

This will give time for the redistricting trial to play out in the NC Supreme Court, which has now been scheduled from January 3-6, and for the NC General Assembly to possibly redraw maps if the State Supreme Court throws out our maps.

Absentee Ballot Request Opens: January 2022, deadline to request is May 10, 2022
Early Voting Days: April 28 - May 14, 2022

Upcoming Events

We’re excited to announce our Town Hall Series that we’ll be hosting in the first quarter of 2022. The first session about redistricting will be held on January 5, featuring Lekha Shupek from All on the Line NC.

Elected officials, activists and experts in their field will join the panel, moderated by Dr. Aimy Steele.

Volunteer Opportunities

We are kicking off our phone banking efforts this Saturday, December 18. Join us to make wellness calls into communities of color.

We also have a big day of action coming up on January 22, 2022 in Robeson County, NC. 4,000 pairs of chino pants have been donated to us to distribute to the Indigenous community in NC. We are seeking partnerships with clothing companies in NC that can donate clothing and perishable items. E-mail us if you can help with this effort at [email protected]

Learning & Unlearning Together

As a white person, especially a person who works with communities of color, there is a lot of learning and un-learning that I must do everyday. Our neighbors of color are not okay. But they don't need us to be white saviors. They need us to understand why they need liberation and to do the work to walk alongside them and lift them up every day to achieve liberation. So today we're going to learn about the difference between equity and equality.

Equality represents equal distribution of resources across communities with different needs that don't yield even outcomes.

Equity advocates for needs-based distribution that creates a similar outcome for all.
