Build Back Better with Solar

Anastasia Gordon and Charles Callaway co-authored an Op-Ed in the New York Daily News this week calling attention to a key provision in the Build Back Better Act that will adjust the tax code to enable low- to moderate-income families to receive the full investment tax credit for installing solar and other renewable energy systems. This would help frontline communities combat climate change and correct years of social and racial inequity in the tax code. Read the Op-Ed ([link removed])

New York City Is Going Gas Free!

In case you missed our email earlier this week ([link removed]) , our Gas Free NYC coalition succeeded in getting the New York City Council to pass Intro 2317, also known as Gas Free NYC, which is a bill that will prevent new buildings from using natural gas and other fossil fuels. Given that 71 percent of the city’s emissions come from buildings burning fossil fuels, this is a huge win for environmental justice. You can learn more about Gas Free NYC here ([link removed]) , and read some of the coverage in Bloomberg ([link removed]) , The City ([link removed]) , and Vox ([link removed]) .

January Membership Meeting

Mark your calendar for 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 8 for our first Membership Meeting of 2022! Our focus will be on New York City policies and improvements we'd like to see from the new leadership. We’ll begin the meeting with breakout groups to discuss various policies and recommendations from the community and then we’ll have newly elected officials – representing Northern Manhattan as well as citywide offices – join us so that members and staff can ask them questions about how they will work to bring environmental justice to our city. Next Year: Our 2022 Policy Agenda

Rather than tell you about all of our amazing accomplishments in 2021, we’d rather look forward to 2022. We encourage you to read WE ACT’s Policy Agenda (it goes great with a cup of hot cocoa) to learn about what we’ll be fighting for next year – and how you can get involved! Happy Holidays!

WE ACT is taking a little time off the for the holidays, returning on January 3 recharged and ready to continue our fight for environmental justice at the city, state, and federal levels. Of course, our staff will be checking emails and voicemails for urgent matters. In the meantime, we encourage you all to be like Tyisha Smalls (above, right) and enjoy the holidays. And remember, if you want to go green, don’t be a Grinch – donate to WE ACT ([link removed]) !
