This is great news, friends:

[ [link removed] ]Starbucks workers in Buffalo have successfully unionized

The workers who formed the Buffalo union were the first Starbucks workers
ever to unionize successfully. Unions are the best way for workers to
empower themselves and fight back against exploitation, and I’m fully in
support of the efforts in Boston.

But the workers in Buffalo were up against significant resistance from
Starbucks management, who flew in the CEO of Starbucks as a way to
intimidate them.

You might be surprised to learn that, while union busting is not legal in
the United States, there are loopholes that allow corporations to lie to
and threaten their employees while not officially meeting the standard of
“union busting.”

This often includes management spying on employees, directly telling them
to vote no on unionization efforts, or insinuating that they could lose
their jobs by voting yes.

On the federal level, I hope to see the PRO (Protecting the Right of
Workers to Organize) Act passed so that workers are given the opportunity
to form unions without fear of retaliation.

And, of course, I am working hard in the State Senate to support policies
that put power back in the hands of workers. I will always stand with
organized labor.

Thank you for reading,
Alessandra
