BJS data collection

National Prisoner Statistics program datasets now available [ [link removed] ]

BJS has released two datasets on prisoner statistics through the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD). These surveys collect data on the number and characteristics of prisoners in state and federal prison facilities, and contain aggregate data on race and sex of prison inmates, inmates held in private facilities and local jails, system capacity, noncitizens, and persons age 17 or younger.

BJS data collection

Mortality in Correctional Institutions program datasets now available [ [link removed] ]

BJS has released four datasets on mortality in correctional institutions through the NACJD. These surveys collect data on quarterly inmate death records from each of the nation's 50 state prison systems, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and 3,095 local jails. Death records include information on decedent personal characteristics (age, race or Hispanic origin, and sex), decedent criminal background (legal status, offense type, and time served), and the death itself (date, time, location, and cause of death, as well as information on the autopsy and medical treatment provided for any illness or disease).

BJS data collection

Census of Medical Examiner and Coroner Offices dataset now available [ [link removed] ]

BJS has released, through the NACJD, a dataset on medical examiner and coroner (ME/C) offices that provided medicolegal death investigation services in the United States during 2018. This census collected data on?


* the personnel, budgets, and workload of ME/C offices
* the number of decedents with unidentified remains on record
* ME/C record-keeping practices
* ME/C use of national databases for unidentified remains.
