Our democracy is under threat — but we have a chance right now to fight back.

Welch for Vermont

Hello,

Our democracy is under threat — but we have a chance right now to fight back.

This week, Senator Raphael Warnock urged his colleagues to pass voting rights legislation, as we have done in the House. Senate Democrats are finally realizing that we need urgent action, this year. We must respond to the Republicans’ wave of voter suppression.

I will do everything I can to protect voting rights. Our right to vote and be heard is the foundation of our democracy.

In a democracy, candidates for public office should compete to see who has the best ideas — not who can best suppress the vote.

But all year long, we’ve seen that the Republican party is all too willing to defy the will of the people.

Over half of the Republicans in the House voted to overturn the election of President Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris. GOP state legislatures have passed voting restriction after voting restriction. These laws disproportionately target communities of color, low-income Americans, and people with disabilities. They are more interested in power than they are in helping people.

We must fight back for free and fair elections. Add your name if you agree that the Senate must protect the right to vote before the year is over, so we can be ready to involve more people in the democratic process in 2022, not fewer.

We need to save our democracy and make it work for working people. Protecting voting rights is the first essential step.

Thank you,

Peter
