John,
Here’s your fun fact about Congress for today: We have these small groups
called ‘caucuses.’ They’re basically groups of members with shared
interests, and there are caucuses for some of the most talked about things
in Washington like health care and environmental issues, but also for
narrower interests: the Chicken Caucus, the Cement Caucus, and even the
Bourbon Caucus.
So when I first got to Congress, my team put a list of all of the
congressional caucuses in front of me. I looked through the long list—and
realized many of the issues that mattered to my family, to my neighbors,
and to the people I had met while campaigning didn’t even have their own
caucus—for example, there was no child care caucus or caucus for student
loans.
I knew I wanted to be a part of shaking up the way things worked in
Washington, and this year I was proud to start the College Affordability
Caucus. I’m also a part of caucuses that focus on issues like mental
health, ending corruption, and preventing gun violence.
It’s a real problem that many Americans don’t trust Congress, so it’s
important we show constituents that their government can work for them.
That starts with members focusing on the issues that matter to working
people, not special interests. The donations politicians receive from
corporate PACs play a role in all of this, and that’s why I’m proud to not
accept a dime of their money. [ [link removed] ]But that means I really rely on people
like you to sustain our campaign.
