John,
2021 may be coming to a close, but CREW’s team is still at work, finishing up a few final legal actions and reports before the year ends. Here’s what we’ve been up to this week:
-
Customs and Border Protection found “no credible threats” ahead of George Floyd’s burial in June 2020, but still sent dozens of officers—including snipers—and authorized them to use deadly force, according to documents recently obtained by CREW. The heavy law enforcement presence at his burial was clearly disproportionate, and is yet another example of federal law enforcement overreach in response to racial justice protests—or even rumors of potential protest.
- Peter Navarro, a former senior Trump White House official, apparently failed to turn over a substantial number of White House records to the National Archives and Records Administration, including personal emails. This is likely a violation of the law, and certainly violates the public trust. We’ve sent a letter to NARA calling on them to act swiftly to obtain these records from Navarro.
- We’ve also been calling on the Senate to stay in session until they’ve passed the Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Democracy reform can’t wait any longer. Help us spread the message—you can share our Tweet or Facebook post, or take the next step and call your senators at 202-224-3121 and tell them not to take a holiday recess before they’ve passed democracy reform.
Thank you,
Noah Bookbinder
President, CREW
