“The president of United Poultry Concerns and a tireless advocate for chickens, turkeys and other farmed fowl can rattle off details and statistics about how turkeys are raised and ‘harvested’ (industry-speak for slaughtered) that are guaranteed to curb – or kill – your appetite. But she’ll settle for three big reasons to skip the turkey this Thanksgiving: ‘Animal cruelty, disease, filth – the toxic waste in the conditions in which the birds are forced to live.’” – Ellen Kanner, Huff Post, Nov. 3, 2021

Dear Karen of UPC, You are such an important personage right now in the animal rights movement. Nobody I know of is currently writing the kind of informed, perspicacious essays and books about animal rights that you are. Thank you! – George Bates, D.V.M.

Dear UPC, Thank you for all you do for the birds. Your publication has influenced me for many years – besides no meat, no eggs for me! I love your recipes. – Monica Staszesky

Dear UPC, I have been supporting United Poultry Concerns since December 2015. When I was in the army in New Mexico in 1993 or 1994 I was in the chow line and fried rabbit was being served and when I was handed the plate a black soldier in front of me said, “Man, why do you want to eat Bugs Bunny?” I felt terrible and the seeds were planted. Around that time I quit eating all red meat and obviously no more bunnies but kept eating poultry and fish. In November 2009 I couldn’t stand the guilt anymore and became a vegetarian but still felt guilty and on August 1, 2015 I became a vegan. Keep up your wonderful work – you are on our first and forever charity list. – James Gately

For 31 years, we’ve been educating the general public and the animal advocacy community about who chickens and turkeys are when they are not in a condition of abject misery. We vigorously promote a compassionate animal-free diet and lifestyle. Together, our books, articles, campaigns, presentations, and sanctuary in Virginia expose the kinds of suffering these birds endure in farming, cockfighting, and experimental research in contrast to the exuberant flock and family life they enjoy in their natural habitats and in our sanctuary.

I have always sought to show these birds in the light of their natural interests, activities, and sensory & emotional vitality versus their desolation and diseases in institutional captivity. But there is much work still to do.

That is why we unstintingly promote animal-free products and vegan cuisine. Encouragingly, this sector of our economy keeps growing. We are on the frontlines of making this happen and we deeply thank our generous and caring members for sharing our aspirations and furthering our accomplishments.

To help us persevere, please visit www.upc-online.org/donate to contribute. Or simply send your tax-deductible check or money order to UPC, PO Box 150, Machipongo, VA 23405. All gifts in any amount are gratefully received and well spent.

For the birds and all of us at United Poultry Concerns, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support. We wish you joy and enthusiasm for Animal Liberation in 2022!
