Hey Indivisibles,
Last night we heard a scary rumor: Senate Democrats are considering
leaving for vacation tonight without passing either Build Back Better or
voting rights legislation.
We cannot allow Senate Democrats to go home without making any progress at
all on these crucial bills! Just 48 hours ago, Senate leadership told us
they were going to move forward “aggressively” on democracy reform this
month! Wanting to go on vacation isn’t an excuse for not doing the job
they were elected for.
But if we don’t get VERY LOUD right now, they may well get away with it.
Which is where you come in.
Build Back Better and the Freedom to Vote Act are crucial pieces of
legislation that will address inflation, put money into working people’s
pockets and ensure our democracy survives and thrives. To move these bills
forward, we have to make our voices heard, loudly, today. Depending on
where you live, here’s your best action:
I have a Democratic Senator
Lucky you! You get to do a classic Indivisible action: Pick up your phone
and call your Senator, and tell them that as their constituent, you expect
them to do their job, bypass the filibuster and strengthen our democracy.
And tell them how mad you’ll be if they go home without making a bit of
progress. Not sure how to get in touch with them? Three easy options: You
can text NoRecess to 97779 to be connected directly, call 1-866-701-6025
to hear a practice script and then be patched through, or [ [link removed] ]enter your
phone number on this page, and we’ll call you with all the info you need.
If you have a second Democratic Senator, don’t forget to call back and
talk to them too!
I don’t have a Democratic Senator,
OR I live somewhere without any Senators at all
OR I have a Democratic Senator, I just called, and I want to do more
Frustrating, we know! But right now we have not one but TWO things to do.
President Biden, if he choses, has more influence than just about anyone
over Democratic Senators. He was elected to lead, and that means using the
bully pulpit of the presidency to ensure his priorities pass into law.
Here are two things you can do to encourage that:
First: [ [link removed] ]You too can make a call, this time to the White House. Tell them
your Senator is a lost cause, and you need President Biden to use the
weight of his authority to work for you and for our democracy, and that
you are livid the Senate may go home without making any progress.
Second: We need to make noise on social media. We think certain members of
President Biden’s staff (particularly [ [link removed] ]White House Chief of Staff Ron
Klain) are susceptible to public pressure, and also that enough social
media outcry may get the news media to realize voters won’t stand for
inaction. So head over to Twitter and send a public tweet (or five). If
you’re not sure what to say, check out our recent [ [link removed] ]tweets for
inspiration.
President Biden has the power to keep the Senate in session. Chuck Schumer
has the power to keep the Senate in session. Individual Senators have the
power to demand Schumer keep the Senate in session. We have the power to
ensure they know we won’t accept anything less. The Truth Is, today is a
make-or-break point. Take action right away to tell our leaders to do
their jobs and move forward on their promises before going on vacation: we
need progress on voting rights this month.
We did not expect to be sending an email like this on December 17th. We
were hoping this legislation would be signed and enacted by now. But if
it's going to last this long, we’re so grateful that we’re doing it with
this incredible group of activists.
In solidarity,
Indivisible Team
P.S. – Like we said we didn’t expect to still be doing full-tilt
legislative advocacy on December 17th! [ [link removed] ]If you can, please chip in $10
or so to help us keep our advocacy tools live, run breaking-news ads, and
support all this work.
