Dear John, This year has been another challenging year for people across the constituency as we have continued to learn how to live through this ongoing Covid pandemic. As we approach the end of 2021, I hope we all take the time to appreciate the important things in life and look after one another as Omicron cases continue to dramatically rise. As ever, it has
been a privilege to represent you in Parliament and fight for a better Edgbaston constituency. Over the last 12 months, I’ve taken on 8,671 new cases on residents’ behalf and resolved almost 7,000 cases that have included: 1) Securing alternative homes for vulnerable families living in cramped temporary accommodation; 2) Addressing people’s concerns with rising crime and working with the Police to make sure that despite their limited resources, cases are prioritised appropriately; 3) Supporting applications of British nationals who remain in Afghanistan with the Home Office; 4) Checking that people
are receiving the benefits they are entitled to from pension eligibility to Universal Credit entitlement. I’ve joined with local residents in standing up against the bank closures that are happening across every ward in the constituency so that people can continue to have access to cash. I worked with residents to set up regular speed watches with the Police and lobbied the council for our roads to be resurfaced and properly maintained. I launched a campaign group to ensure that women and young people are safe at night and that we put an end to drink and injection spiking. I’ve continued to
work with residents and action groups to see that exempt accommodation which, causes so much anti-social behaviour, is better regulated, including the first closure of a substandard property, Saif Lodge. I’ve also worked hard in Parliament to represent you, holding Government to account on their actions around their utterly unacceptable behaviour and the standards they have set. I have continued to challenge the Government and support leaseholders that are stuck in unsafe and flammable homes that they cannot sell. It's been vital that as Shadow Secretary of State for International Development
I fought against the crippling cuts to aid budgets that will see millions around the world left to suffer and Britain’s global reputation diminish. Birmingham MPs on both sides of the political aisle came together to set up an All-Party Parliamentary Group for Birmingham, that Andrew Mitchell and myself will co-chair to lobby for the improvement of our city. I supported the huge victory for Sikh farmers in India fought hard for the repeal of what they called the black laws and showed exactly what the largest social movement in the world could achieve. That’s just a taste of some of the things I have achieved in 2021 and I look
forward to continuing working for you in 2022. If you want to learn more about what I've been up to, please make sure you subscribe to my weekly newsletter here. Over the next fortnight, I will still be available to help and advise constituents so please do get in touch if you need any support either on 0121 392 8426 or [email protected]. I’m aware that one of the biggest over the Christmas period that affects us all is the changing bin schedule. To understand when yours will be collected, please
