Dear John,

Today, The Sentencing Project is pleased to release a new policy brief, Youth in Adult Courts, Jails and Prisons. This resource reviews the history, harms, pathways and trends that treat children as if they were adults. It also highlights the progress made by states in reducing the number of youth under age 18 who face adult prosecution by 80% in the past fifteen years, from 250,000 to 53,000 youth every year.

Despite this progress, the brief highlights the pervasive racial and ethnic disparities that persist and the many pathways that still drive tens of thousands of youth into adults’ courts every year.

In 2022, the Youth Justice Team will work with community partners to continue challenging these harmful and ineffective policies, focusing on campaigns to end automatic transfer in Maryland, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia.
