The Covid Reformation

This morning I noted:

We have come to fetishize science in our cultural.  By that I mean imbue it with religious significance.  (Interestingly a “fetish” can be an object of religious devotion, but when I went to check the word “fetishize” in several on-line dictionaries, they all popped up with sex-related definitions and nothing about religiosity – that is quite the social commentary.)  Our culture has come to view science as revelatory.

I’ve been thinking about that all day.  I think I said more than I realized. 

The Misuse Of Numbers

Back in October, I quoted Lord Kelvin:

When you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it; but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meagre and unsatisfactory kind: it may be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely, in your thoughts, advanced to the stage of science, whatever the matter may be.

At that time, I was objecting to how many agencies were using number derivatives (percentages, things like that) to avoid presenting the actual numbers about covid because the actual numbers were improving.  I was complaining that the agencies were...
