Dear John

Every day there is more terrible news from Burma. More arrests, more people killed. Across the country the military are attacking civilians, with new attacks in Karen State this week forcing thousands more people to flee their homes. More than 300,000 people, mostly in ethnic states, have been forced to flee their homes since the coup.

While people in Burma do all they can to resist the military, it is vital we do all we can to maximise international pressure on the military. We have to cut the supply of money and arms.

This month we made some more progress on this, but there is much, much more that needs to be done. Your continuing support for our campaigns is making a difference. Thank you.

New sanctions from the UK, USA and Canada
The British government has imposed a new round of sanctions on the Burmese military, this time targeting military bodies responsible for the purchase and manufacture of arms. They were also able to coordinate the sanctions with Canada and the USA, increasing the impact of the sanctions.

These were sanctions that Burma Campaign UK had been calling for.

You can read our media release responding to the new sanctions here. ([link removed])
Tell Turkey to impose an arms embargo
When police started opening fire on peaceful protesters after the military coup on February 1st 2021, gun cartridges left behind had the name of an Italian company on them.

But it wasn’t Italy which had exported them (the EU has an arms embargo). The cartridges were supplied by a Turkish company which had purchased them from Italy and then sold them on to the Burmese military.

Even after Turkey condemned the genocide of the Rohingya in 2017, it had still allowed Turkish companies to supply equipment to the military which committed that genocide.

Tell Turkey to stop arming the Burmese military. Email the Turkish government here. ([link removed])

660 letters calling for action on accountability sent to Foreign Secretary Liz Truss

660 letters from Burma Campaign UK supporters, calling on the British government to join the genocide case at the International Court of Justice, have been sent to Foreign Secretary Liz Truss.

The British government talks about supporting justice and accountability for the Burmese military, including the genocide of the Rohingya, but refuse to take practical action like joining a case at the International Court of Justice which will rule on whether the military committed genocide.

It’s been a terrible year for the people of Burma, but time and again people tell us how important international support is. Thank you for providing that support.
