At some point, the politics around reproductive healthcare, pregnancy, abortion, and maternal health becomes personal for so many of us.

If you’ve followed my story closely, you know I often talk about my son Jordan as our “miracle baby.”

This story ends with me fighting for pro-choice policies as a Congresswoman. From the time my son Jordan could walk and talk, I tried to teach him that his life was truly a gift – that his presence here on earth meant something. 

I called him my miracle child because there was a time I believed I would never be able to bring his life into the world. 

You see, ever since I had decided to have children, getting pregnant and bringing a child into this world became a tremendous struggle.

Even today, it can still be taboo to bring up infertility issues publicly, but when I was trying to conceive in the early 1990’s – speaking out publicly was almost unheard of. As a result, I mostly suffered in silence as I had a string of miscarriages. I began to fear that I would never be able to become a mother.

Then came the biggest setback yet. After what we thought may become a successful pregnancy in 1993, my son Lucien was stillborn. At that point, doctors told me I had a condition that made it nearly impossible for me to conceive and carry a pregnancy to full term. And then, another miscarriage. At that point, I had nearly given up. I began to think about adoption.

So, imagine my surprise when I was able to get pregnant with Jordan in 1994. I was able to go on medical leave, and my doctors put me on nine months of bed rest. I spent the most boring nine months of my life sitting, cross-stitching, reading, watching TV, and talking on the phone. 

Then in February 1995, Jordan was born as a happy, healthy, and screaming baby. To this day, I am so thankful to the many doctors, specialists, and nurses who guided us through my pregnancy.

Why do I tell you this story, John? Why now? Well, as the Supreme Court begins to make their most consequential decision in decades on the future of Roe v. Wade and abortion access in America, I want you to know exactly where I stand as a pro-choice advocate fighting for you in Congress:

1. I will always defend every woman’s right to make her own choices about her own body. 
2. Those choices should only be made by a woman in consultation with her doctor.
3. Here’s who shouldn’t be making these consequential decisions on behalf of private citizens: Legislators in Washington (where Congress is made up of 73% men) or any state capitol, and judges at the state or federal level.

John – I fully intend on returning to Congress in 2022, and continuing to speak out forcefully and use my platform to advocate for pro-choice policies in Georgia and in Congress. So, I'm humbly asking: can you support our people-powered re-election campaign today?
