It's November and the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women (CSVANW) wants you to join us as we celebrate Native American Heritage Month. As our tribal communities gather this fall season to feast, dance, pray and celebrate our harvest from a year of hard work, CSVANW invites you to join us as we celebrate our resiliency and honor our relatives who are making our tribal communities stronger and more resilient than ever. This month is also an opportunity to educate and raise awareness about the historical and ongoing challenges that tribes and communities face and how they have addressed them. Together, we are resilient.

CSVANW in the Community

CSVANW learned about New Mexico Domestic Violence Relinquishment Law that took effect on July 1, 2019. State Senator Antionette Sedillo Lopez was leading a conversation about the important effects of this new law and the safety of survivors of domestic violence.

CSVANW Meets Newest Tribal Level Member

CSAVNW met with our new newest Tribal Level members, Taos Pueblo. We strategize ways to collaborate, build relationships, and support community. We are excited to work with all of Taos Pueblo’s eleven programs. Together we do more.

CSVANW joined community partners and ABQ Mayor, Tim Keller, to launch the domestic violence task force. A municipal based collaboration to improve safety and services to survivors of domestic violence.

CSVANW Joins & Supports Santa Ana Pueblo's DVAM Events

CSVANW was in Santa Ana Pueblo to support their DVAM events. Santa Ana DV Program had a week of activities planned for the community. Some included self-defense demonstrations and a wellness run.

CSVANW Watched Buffy Sainte-Marie Perform

A special thank you to Indigenous Solution's, Inc. and @indigiefemme for inviting CSVANW to witness the amazing performance by Buffy Sainte-Marie. We were pleased to have the opportunity to stand in solidarity with our other relatives from around the region to call attention to the epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. The performance was powerful and at the direct request of the artist, pictures were not allowed during the performance before the packed house.

CSVANW Supported Sing Our Rivers Red's (SOOR) MMIW Earring Exhibit

CSVANW was at the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in support of the Sing Our Rivers Red (SORR) MMIW Earring Exhibit. Education, prevention and healing through community efforts was the focus of the day.

CSVANW spoke on MMIWG I New Mexico at the Defiance of Silence. The Defiance of Silence is a proactive, multi-media art installation aimed to expose injustice against Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls (MMIWG).

CSVANW 4th Annual #IWillRunForHer 5k

THANK YOU to all our relatives from our communities for coming out to our 4th Annual #IWillRunForHer 5k! Thank you for all your support and joining us in the movement to breaking cycles of violence in our tribal communities. We had approximately 300 relatives join us this year and we thank you all so much. A BIG THANK YOU to our amazing volunteers for helping us set up and making our 5k run smoothly. Congratulations to our top runners! And thank you to our sponsors for making our 5k possible.

Educating on MMIW at UNM

CSVANW Brings DV Awareness to Young Relatives at Pojoaque High School

CSVANW supported the Pojoaque DV Prevention by bringing domestic violence awareness to our young relatives at Pojoaque High School in Pojoaque, New Mexico. We also tabled alongside service providers and supporting the Pojoaque DV Prevention at their Open house. Thank you to everyone who are advocating for our relatives affected by violence.

CSVANW Gave Updates at the NCAI Task Force on Violence Against Native Women

CSVANW’s interim executive director, Angel Charley, gave updates at the National Congress of American Indians Domestic Violence task force on violence against Native women gathering, along with other amazing Tribal Coalitions.

CSVANW Joined Support for the Premiere of "Amá"

October 21, 2019

CSVANW, Planned Parenthood Rocky Mountains, Indigenous Womxn Rising, Young Women United, The Red Nation, The Native American Women’s Health Education Resource Center collaborated to premiere Amá. Amá is a feature length documentary which tells an important and untold story: the abuses committed against Native American women by the United States Government during the 1960’s and 70’s: removed from their families and sent to boarding schools, forced relocation away from their traditional lands and involuntary sterilization.

Wear Purple Thursday

October 24, 2019

CSVANW wore purple on Wear Purple Day for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The day is to raise awareness about domestic, intimate partner, and teen dating violence. With the wearing of purple, we hope that it begins conversations about domestic violence, and start conversations about building healthy relationships.

CSVANW Receives Copy of Jesscia Mehta’s New Book “Savagery”

CSVANW received a copy of Jesscia Mehta’s (an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation) new book “Savagery.” The book takes an autobiographical lens on a variety of issues that disproportionately affects our indigenous communities. The book is also dedicated to the missing and murdered indigenous women’s movement. “As an indigenous woman who has lost their entire immediate family to disparities that are preventable yet prevalent in post-Colonial America, these stories are all of ours. These poems are truths, our lives, and our hopes. This book is for all of us.” – Jessica Mehta. Thank you for sharing your story with us and with our communities.

4th Annual #IWillRunForHer 5k Photo Blog Recap

We had approximately 300 hundred participants dedicate their run, jog or walk to victims and survivors of domestic violence at our 4th Annual #IWillRunForHer 5k on Saturday, October 12, 2019, at the Southwest Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI). Our annual #IWillRunForHer 5k is held every October in conjunction with National Domestic Violence Awareness Month to promote healing and wellness through running, and to further raise awareness about domestic violence affecting tribal communities.
