Dear Friend,
As you know, we are in the middle of a marijuana vaping crisis.
We have been dutifully updating our factsheet and talking points with each announcement from the CDC and other government bodies as more information comes out and quite frankly, with each death and each case of sickness, our mission becomes ever more crucial.
With Big Marijuana’s spin doctors out in full force trying to peddle their misinformation and place the blame for this crisis solely on black market products, we turned to real doctors, members of our Science Advisory Board, to help members of Congress and other pertinent regulatory bodies understand how “legal” marijuana products are liable for a number of deaths and a multitude of illness.
Our Advisory Board, comprised of researchers from such institutions as Harvard, Yale, and Johns Hopkins, penned a letter laying out how “legal” products have been tied to cases of death and illness in Oregon, Delaware, Maryland, Michigan, and Tennessee. Additionally, the letter laid out key recommendations to Congress, including pumping the brakes on any legislation rewarding the industry with banking access and investment opportunities.
In the last week, our staff have held multiple meetings in the Senate and many senators are beginning to see through the pot industry’s spin. But we cannot let up now.
We have warned for years that marijuana commercialization would turn fatal, much like the commercialization of Tobacco did at the turn of the century. And now those warnings are coming true.
Any amount you can give today as a gift to SAM will help us budget one more day in this fight for public health and put us in the ring for one more round with Big Marijuana. Their pockets are deep, but our resolve is strong.
Together, we can help save lives.

Co-founded in 2013 by former Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy and Dr. Kevin A. Sabet, a former senior drug policy advisor to the Obama Administration, Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) is the nation's premier non-profit, non-partisan marijuana policy organization. Advised by a blue ribbon scientific advisory board, SAM envisions a society where marijuana policies are aligned with the scientific understanding of marijuana's harms, and the commercialization and normalization of marijuana are no more. Its mission is to educate citizens on the science of marijuana and to promote health-first, smart policies and attitudes that decrease marijuana use and its consequences.
SAM has advised almost every state government in the U.S., Pope Francis, Queen Silvia of Sweden, and several other governments, dignitaries, and international organizations. It has Special Consultative Status with the United Nations, and SAM team members have testified before Congress numerous times, as well as have appeared in almost every media outlet in the country.
