Dear John,

This year marked a historic first for the Nonhuman Rights Project and the animal rights movement as a whole. For the first time in history, the highest court of any English-speaking jurisdiction agreed to hear arguments demanding a legal right for a nonhuman animal in our case to free Happy the elephant [[link removed]] from the Bronx Zoo to a sanctuary.

Our legal fight for Happy’s freedom brings together centuries of landmark civil rights cases, the science of elephant cognition and behavior, the origins of legal rights, judicial rulings from outside the US that have granted rights to nonhuman animals, and ethical arguments against elephant captivity. It has gained the support of the world-respected experts in elephant cognition and behavior, animal law, theology, philosophy, habeas corpus, and more, including legal scholar and Harvard Law School Professor Laurence H. Tribe [[link removed]] and philosopher and University of Chicago Law School Professor Martha C. Nussbaum [[link removed]] . As award-winning historian Jill Lepore put it in the Atlantic [[link removed]] , our litigation on Happy’s behalf is “the most important animal-rights case of the 21st century.”

You’ve played a huge role in achieving this historic progress for Happy and all nonhuman beings who suffer as she has. Whenever we’ve called on you to take action to help free Happy by donating, completing action alerts, signing petitions, and spreading the word of her plight, you’ve been there. For all the ways you’ve been able to support us this year, we thank you so much!

Today we call on you to help us strengthen even further the fight for Happy’s freedom in 2022. If you’re in a position to do so, please consider making a year-end donation online today [[link removed]] or see all the other ways to give [[link removed]] so we can expand her grassroots advocacy campaign as we await her hearing, fully fund her court case, and further educate elected government officials, members of the media, and the public at large about Happy’s plight and why all elephants need and deserve the right to liberty.

Thank you for caring,
Mickey Suzuki
Development Director, the NhRP
