OUTSIDE MATTERS: THE TRUST FOR PUBLIC LAND.
Dear John: Community-owned forests provide unparalleled access to the outdoors. It doesn't stop there, though. This month we walk you through all the ways these forests benefit their communities.

P.S. We love hearing from our supporters. Share your thoughts on this newsletter with us. — Bryan M. Vance, The Trust for Public Land.

Forests are shrinking and disappearing across the United States. Over the past two decades, we’ve pioneered a movement to save our forestlands. Here's a look at our community forest model, and why it holds promise to protect this vital resource.

LEARN HOW COMMUNITY FORESTS WORK

Despite the importance and popularity of our nation's forests, they are facing unprecedented threats: extreme drought, growing rates of pests, and severe megafires. We cannot stand by and watch as our forests are destroyed acre by acre. Take action now and demand Congress protect our national forests today!

Your year-end tax-deductible gift by midnight on December 31 will be matched, maximizing your impact on our critical work. The Trust for Public Land is already able to save $11 worth of land for every $1 you donate. And thanks to this matching gift offer, we can now save twice as much land—that’s $22 worth of land for every dollar donated.

Community Forests are a go-to for locals or visitors who want to play in the snow—whether by ski, snowshoe, or just nestled in your favorite boots. Huntington Community Forest has great trails—and a new fire pit and kiosk—thanks to a generous grant from L.L.Bean.

The public will have free permanent access to Kootenai Forestlands near the city of Libby in northwest Montana. This landscape is a migratory corridor for elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer, and moose and will ensure protection for threatened species such as bull trout, grizzly bear, and Canada lynx. Collectively, our conservation projects in Montana and Idaho have protected a quarter-million acres for present and future generations to enjoy.

Being outside brings me back to WHAT IS. It's a reminder of what's real, what matters, and what we all are a part of.

Each month, we feature a quote from one of The Trust for Public Land's staff members, volunteers, or supporters about the power of the outdoors. Share why you're thankful for the outdoors for a chance to be featured in a future newsletter.

We have long been dedicated to protecting the forested headwaters of our nation’s largest river, the Mississippi. By protecting over 13,500 acres and 64 miles of shoreline in the headwater region, we are creating habitat-rich, publicly accessible places for the community to get outside and have some fun.
