Dear Friend,

This year, organizations across the nation were called to action. The need? To resettle an increasing number of Afghan refugees after the evacuation of U.S. troops from the region. The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) processed nearly a thousand Afghan arrivals in September of this year alone and has increased its efforts to resettle more Afghan refugees through its network of 41 sites across 27 states, including New York, North Carolina, and Ohio.

USCRI has seen time and time again how communities come together to work with their local organizations and lend a helping hand when there is great need. Community members like you are an instrumental part of furthering our mission and we hope to count on your generosity this season ([link removed]) to make a difference in the lives of those who are forcibly or voluntarily uprooted.

Despite this difficult year, USCRI continues to expand its mission and welcome refugees and immigrants across the nation. Our network of field offices and partner agencies serve our most vulnerable populations and know how to quickly adapt to the needs of newcomer populations. USCRI has answered the call to serve others for 110 years and, with your help, will continue to do so for as long as it takes.

Let me give you just one example. USCRI’s Cleveland field office has stepped up to the challenge of serving Afghan arrivals by exploring new initiatives that will benefit both the community members and their new neighbors. Our Cleveland office is currently developing a co-operative to source and create traditional Afghan cushions. We’ve also launched a Community Sponsorship program to help leverage the outpouring of support received from the community. Cleveland has a long history of welcoming refugees and immigrants and has a community that embraces newcomers. In fact, USCRI Cleveland’s staff is largely composed of individuals who have firsthand experience in the refugee or immigrant plight.

USCRI Cleveland is currently working around the clock to support around 200 recently arrived refugees, resettling more refugees in two months than in the previous two years! With the partnership of countless community leaders, our focus in Cleveland has been on securing housing, providing food, assisting with health-related issues, and providing immediate material support.

While we have received support from volunteers and community members eager to help, there are other needs that also need to be met. During this season of giving, you can help offices like USCRI Cleveland meet the needs of refugees and immigrants by donating today ([link removed]) or becoming a sustaining member with USCRI. You can designate a specific field office, like Cleveland, to support, or give wherever the need is greatest.

Darren Hamm, USCRI Cleveland’s Director, talks about his gratitude in working with refugees. “I’m privileged to have the opportunity to have the smallest moment to share in their lives, a fingerprint left on their journey, to be part of the story of this experience. I secretly hope that all those we serve know how profoundly they impact my life, and that of my family.”

As the year-end approaches, we ask you to make a generous gift today ([link removed]) so that we can welcome refugees and immigrants into a brighter future – a future free of persecution where they can achieve their dreams.

Thanks very much,

Kevin Sturtevant, CFRE
