Dear friends,

A 2020 Pew Research Center survey revealed that 41% of Americans have personally experienced some form of online harassment. We’re on a mission to reduce trauma for those who are most affected by this issue through our Heartmob platform. With a community of more than 11.000 users, we believe bystander intervention is an empowering tool for addressing online violence and making a difference.

This year we made major improvements to our platform’s UX design based on user feedback and have added some effective tools for journalists.

We are happy to see that many of our users have found HeartMob to be a useful tool for support and empowerment. According to an external program evaluation of HeartMob conducted in 2021 by Germain Solutions, 64% of users who have experienced harassment reported that the platform was very helpful or somewhat helpful in making them feel connected to, and supported by, others.

Many people also reported that the act of sharing and/or documenting their experience was cathartic and had emotional value. About 53% of people who have experienced harassment said that being part of a community is one of the aspects they get the most value out of the platform. “It really helped to just get it all out – get it off my chest,” said one user.

Simultaneously, 76% of bystanders found value in sending words of support, while 73% appreciated reading other people’s stories, and 67% appreciated being part of a community.
