Friend – Since the 2020 census results came out earlier this year, it's been an uphill battle to ensure that the current redistricting cycle is conducted fairly for all of us. You can get all the details at this resource. We don't have to tell you how critical this process is to our democracy – or how it has been used to deprive communities of color of political power for centuries. The new district maps being drawn up right now are going to determine our ability to pick our representatives. They will determine the outcome of future elections for a decade. And given that the midterms are in less than a year – these realities will hit hard very quickly if we don't do all we can to stop blatant gerrymandering efforts right now. That's why the ACLU has made this urgent work one of our key priorities. For everyone keeping track at home, here's where we've filed redistricting litigation so far to ensure fair maps are secured in state after state:
And we aren't going to stop in these states, ACLU Supporter. The ACLU is striving to bring at least 10 lawsuits total nationwide that produce fairer maps through the midterms and beyond. Our attorneys are focusing on state legislatures – the same places where we've seen wave after wave of anti-civil liberties bills introduced this year, from restrictions on abortion to gender-affirming healthcare for transgender youth. We're also closely monitoring the South – to ensure that the same states with a history of disenfranchising Black communities in particular heed the fundamental principles of democracy, representation, and equality. Learn more about our current redistricting cases – and explore ways to get involved and take a deep dive on your own district maps across the decades. But of course, most importantly, know that in the critical work for fair representation and equal voting rights that is up ahead in 2022 – the ACLU is not backing down for a second. And we're incredibly grateful to have you with us in the fight ahead. Please stay tuned and thank you. For the people, The ACLU Team |
