Dear John
Parliamentary recess - Here’s what it means for our
campaigns
Despite the various crises
engulfing the Prime Minister right now, his government is pressing
ahead with massive changes to the way our country works. From
elections, to protesting, to the power of the courts, our Senior
Campaigns and Policy Officer Maheen Behrana has set out what we can
expect in the New Year.
Much of the legislation in the
pipeline looks set to take power away from the people and concentrate
it in the Government’s hands.
But these bills won’t necessarily
pass unamended - and we have lots of opportunities to tackle their
most worrying aspects. Just this week, an important Parliamentary
committee of MPs called for the government to pause the Elections Bill
and rethink it.
Through work with parliamentarians,
research and campaigning - and of course with your support - we will
pile pressure on the Government and make sure it knows that it
can’t go too far.
We’ll keep you updated with the
progress of these bills next year, and want to thank you again for
being part of a movement that is sending the strongest possible signal
to Boris Johnson, that his authoritarianism has no place in modern
Britain.
Best wishes,
Naomi Smith
