Remembering Bonegilla

Tomorrow marks 50 years since the Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre closed to migrant accommodation after 24 years of operation and more than 320,000 people coming to Bonegilla as their first stop in Australia.

To acknowledge the anniversary, we have been sharing a series of news stories, interesting facts, photos, and Facebook posts.

Recent visitor experience

We enjoy hearing stories from our visitors.

98-year-old Amalia Lenaz (wearing sunglasses in picture) came through Bonegilla at the age of 25.

From Italy she travelled to Germany then Australia per Castle Bianco departing Genoa in September 1950. Such an amazing lady, so many memories of life at Bonegilla.

Amelia recalled the bed being uncomfortable and ‘top to bottom’ change of sheets once a week. The Wangaratta resident recently visited the site with family and friends.

The Arc Memorial sculpture plaques

It is now too close to Christmas to get a plaque finalised, but we are able to assist with a certificate for you to present to family members to acknowledge there will be a plaque laid in their honour.

Please submit an application form on the website  or get in touch with the team to organise this for you.
