Last week Transparent GMU launched a new campaign calling on their university to officially cut ties with its Koch-funded centers. That’s right-- they’re demanding that the Mercatus Center, the Institute for Humane Studies, and the Law and Economics Center be formally removed from campus. These programs at George Mason University serve as a model for Koch’s programs across the country. They have underpinned the Koch network’s climate denial movement for the past decade, facilitated the recruitment of young people into the Koch network’s political infrastructure, and educated over 2,000 federal and state judges in how to apply pro-corporate principles to their judicial decisions. By being associated with a university, these programs are allowed to masquerade as independent academic entities while actually serving as lobbying groups for its corporate donors.
