Dear John,
We are excited to share big news regarding efforts to curb Uyghur forced labor and combat Islamophobia.
This week, the Senate and the House reached a compromise on the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act to block all trade, imports, and production from regions where Uyghur forced labor is taking place.
Yesterday, the House swiftly took action and passed the new version of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act "Happy to report that Senator Rubio & I just reached an agreement on the final text of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. We will be moving our bill through both chambers & to President Biden's desk as quickly as possible." -Rep. James McGovern Now, the Senate must follow the House in promptly passing the new version of this bill. Our team has worked tirelessly on this issue since the first version of the bill was introduced in 2019. We will continue to provide you with updates on the status of this crucial legislation and ensure that the finalized language truly targets the vast system of forced Uyghur labor.
We are proud to report that the House of Representatives passed a bill to establish a State Department special envoy to combat global Islamophobia. The bill was sponsored by Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-MN-5) and Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL-9).
Since her tenure began, Rep. Omar has been the victim of bigoted abuse, especially by some of her Republican colleagues. This is why Emgage joined a coalition of nearly 250 organizations as a cosponsor of the 'Combating International Islamophobia Act' (H.R.5665).
We wholeheartedly support the passage of this critical bill in the House to send a clear message: anti-Muslim sentiment has no place in our halls of Congress or anywhere.
Since the inception of Emgage 15 years ago, our efforts to engage our community members have led to an ever-increasing Muslim American voter turnout. We have also played a crucial role in ensuring that Muslim Americans remain civically engaged, run for office, and continue to highlight the concerns, values, and needs of our community.
We're proud to say that Muslim Americans are holding public office at the highest rate in history.
To celebrate all we've accomplished and to see what we have planned for 2022, join us at our 15th Anniversary Gala on December 19th at 6:00 PM EST.
